Hadskis sits in Commercial Court, in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter and opened in October 2014. Named after Stewart Hadski, who ran the iron foundry where Hadskis now stands over a quarter of a century ago., this stylish dining room is part of the group of eateries owned by Niall McKenna, The others being James Street South, The Belfast Bar & Grill, Cast & Crew and the James Street South Cookery School.
An impressive little collection it has to be said. A quick coffee in Cast & Crew was as far as I had got in experiencing any of these until now, but I was in “the CQ” at a Virtual Reality & Marketing workshop (another story) so I took advantage, having heard excellent things about their great value lunch menu.
Hadskis is at the Donegal Street end of the Commercial Court so nicely off the beaten track and the hubbub of Hill Street where the Harp Bar, the Duke of York and the Dirty Onion all challenge for your place to go for a pint after dinner. Personally, turning right out on to Donegal Street and into the John Hewitt is as good a move as any.
A new foodie find
Lunches range from a quick £6.50 Tart of the Day to a sit and savour Steak Frites with cafe de Paris butter at a nudge over a tenner. I didn’t get far past the first thing on the list, Black & white pudding warm potato salad topped with a fried egg, also a snip at £6.50.
This led to me discovering simply the best black pudding I’ve ever tasted. McCarthy’s artisan butchers from Kanturk in north-west County Cork, unbelievable. For all my searching it doesn’t seem to be available to buy in Northern Ireland (if anyone knows any different please let me know) but it would nearly be worth the trip down south to get some, failing that you can get it online here.
Suffice it to say it made the dish, the rest of which was also delicious. fantastic quality for the price.
If your inro your wine, then Wine Mondays are worth checking out at Hadskis. A wine pairing night which includes a 3-course meal with a different theme each time. more information and dates for these can be found here.
Fine food and service from Hadskis, and plenty of good reasons to go back for more. Make a booking by ringing 02890325444 or book on their website
