Lunch at Chiquito

Chiquito, Victoria Square, Belfast

So I had a real treat of a lunch today. Sampling the new menu in Chiquito in Victoria Square along with some of my fellow bloggers. This Tex Mex restaurant has been open for 8 years and has withstood the competition from other resident eateries in Victoria Square, despite many of these being big chain names such as Nando’s, McDonald’s and TGI Friday. This is no mean feat given that it’s the only one of its kind in all of Ireland.

The restaurant serves a great range of fantastically vibrant food coupled with a fully stocked bar which includes 26 types of Tequila something they proudly specialise in.

The Lunch menu has you spoilt for choice with many of the expected traditional Mexican dishes done with a nice twist like the ‘Street Style’ Burrito, plenty of burgers and wraps and a selection of Texan ‘Tortas’, a Texan style sandwich with brioche bun, chipotle and slaw.

I had the very popular Jalapeno Poppers to start followed by the Bandito Burrito Burger, served in a toasted tortilla wrap with chipotle mayo, jalapenos and cheese served with skin on fries and house slaw. Tremendous food all round and a nice touch having the burger in a toasted wrap giving a real crunch instead of the heaviness of a burger bun.

What’s particularly good about the Lunchtime deal is the price. With the main’s all being £5 and a refillable drink at £2.65 you get yourself a good lunch for less than £8, an absolute bargain given the quality of the food.

The impressive restaurant décor, full of pictures, ornaments, artefacts along with the music and of course sombreros a plenty all of which took me back to the Gulf Coast and to Cancun where I spent 2 amazing weeks now what seems like a lifetime ago.

We burned off a few calories at the end with a little friendly piñata thrashing. I was lucky enough to be the one who broke it, claiming a dinner for two as the prize! Not a bad afternoon’s work and of course (not that one was needed) an excuse for another visit. Will definitely be trying one or two of those tequilas when I return.

Thanks to David and the folks at Chiquito’s for a wonderful lunch. And a final thanks to fellow food blogger the Belfast Food Man whose company I thoroughly enjoyed along with the food.
