Havana Bank Sq., Berry Street, Belfast
I’ve been busting to try this place for ages, in fact from back when it was ‘Café Havana’. So on a slightly wet and weary Thursday lunch time I took myself down for a wee walk round the Folktown Market (on every Thursday in Bank Square) and then popped into Havana for a bite to eat. As mentioned, version 1 of this place was a Café, serving Cuban cuisine.
However, a year or so after opening in 2013 it rebranded as Havana Bank Sq, a casual dining restaurant incorporating a combination of dishes & flavours including traditional, Thai and Trans-Atlantic. The express lunch menu (and the dinner menu which is quite similar) is a good mix of all of these and including Panang Curry, Loaded Burger & Fries and Cottage Pie. Good options for gluten free and veggie and a nice list of sides.
Having had a peek at the menu beforehand I liked the sound of the Chicken Wings and after sitting mulling over this enticing list of food I went with my gut instinct and got the Wings with some Chunky Chips to accompany so they didn’t get too lonely! Now trusting my gut doesn’t usually yield good results, thankfully, today was different.
Well-cooked chips and plenty of them. They were lovely and crisp with lots of wee crunchy bits at the bottom which I love, great for dipping in the dressing. Superb coating on the chicken wings which the Chef, I was told, took time and effort to perfect, time well spent! The honey mustard dressing was fantastic, well balanced with a sweet tanginess at the start, the heat of the mustard following and plenty of crunch in the fresh scallions.
What I particularly loved about this place was the décor. Bare brick walls, large chandeliers and striking red chairs complete with huge wall sign bearing the restaurant name. Relaxing and enjoyable surroundings with some good acoustic versions of pop & rock hits playing in the background and a nice hum of lunch munchers’ chit chat.
Their new Summer menu is due for launch soon, a perfect reason for another visit. Casual dining at its finest! Thanks to Stephanie and the folks at Havana Bank Sq.
